What Is GOTS?
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is an independent certification for textiles made from organic fibers, such as organic cotton. Unlike standards that only certify the raw fiber, GOTS certification follows the product through every stage of processing — ginning, spinning, knitting or weaving, dyeing, and final manufacturing — as well as trading and labelling. This means a GOTS label isn't just about where the cotton was grown; it also reflects the environmental and social practices used to turn that fiber into a finished garment. GOTS certification is renewed annually through independent, on-site inspections by accredited certification bodies, covering both environmental criteria (such as banned chemical inputs and wastewater treatment) and social criteria (such as fair labour practices). For buyers, this means less duplicated audit work — a Sedex-registered factory's data can be shared with multiple buyers rather than each brand commissioning a separate audit.
